Apart from the Jagdschloss with its museum, castle parklands and the fabulous forest, there is another highlight to be discovered – only a few kilometres from Kranichstein: the UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit, which was an ancient crater lake around 47 million years ago.

Kranichstein is part of Darmstadt, and can be reached quickly from the main railway station of the pretty Art Nouveau city. Thus, the highlights of Darmstadt are practically on the doorstep. For example, the Waldspirale, the Mathildenhöhe artists’ colony, the Staatstheater or the Geo-Park Bergstraße-Odenwald.
